I think it's a tie between state of mind and physical stimuli that determines the end result. If both mental and physical condition are right, nipple stimulation (as well as gentle touch in other places) releases the "love hormone", oxytocin; the same hormone that's released when a baby suckles to help the mother and baby bond, and has a side effect of making us feel good and loving :).
