Another explanation of the origin of the toast was given to me from a high ranking naval officer during a naval wedding speach. He claimed that, centuries past, sailors on board a rocking ship (i assume officers) would place a piece of toast on the wine cup to stop it spilling and when they raised the glass they were also raising the toast which ended up in the wine.....and over time the tradition moved to land and the etymology took shape.
